FOUNDER RESEARCH

Chrome extension market research notes.

I track Chrome Web Store rankings, listings, and growth data while building Extension Ranker. These are the real observations behind the product, published as they happen.

"Is it too late to build a Chrome extension?" I keep seeing this question. Then I found an extension called "Video Downloader." July 12: 127 users. No rating. No reviews. August 3: 8,000 users. That's 3 weeks. But here's what got me — on July 11, it was already ranking #1 for "download YouTube video as 4k" while it still had three-digit users. Today it holds top-5 on 23 keywords. It didn't earn its way up slowly. It just... walked in. That's not luck. There's a specific reason why that happens, and most developers never figure it out.

A Chrome extension changed its name: Ninja Block -> Ad Block Ninja Over the next month: Users: 10K → 100K users Reviews: 7 → 66 It can not prove rename drove growth. But it did indeed improve the searchability. What do you think?

Chrome extension "Cashback Master" went 40K → 100K users in 5 weeks. +150%. Buyhatke, same niche: 900K → 1M. Same window, the giant sprang a leak — Honey (PayPal): 13M → 12M. Down a million. Users leaking from the top are getting caught, cup by cup, by the small tools below. When the biggest player in a niche starts slipping: entry signal, or red flag?

Every AI product ships a side-quest. Gemini launched image generation. A tiny Chrome extension called "Gemini Watermark Remover" 7K → 30K users in 5 weeks. Half of that in the last 9 days. I'm not endorsing it. Just noting the pattern: The winners of an AI launch aren't only the labs. They're also the devs who ship the side-quest 48 hours later.

The 2026 World Cup has seen the rise of several "dark horses". One of them isn't on the pitch. A Chrome extension sat dead for 4 years — then came back to life with a rename. "World Cup Qatar 2022". 932 users. Zero momentum. One week before kickoff, the dev renamed it "World Cup 2026". One month later: 5x users. 5.0 rating. Same product. Same code. The only change: a title pointed at what people actually search. Dark horses on the pitch aren't just luck. Neither was this one. Good Job @cesarwbr !

Fastest-growing indie extension in Extension Ranker database over the past 5 weeks: Tally, a Claude token counter. Users 30K → 70K Reviews 369 → 1,100 Rating steady at 4.5 A pure utility tripling its review count in 5 weeks means people actually use it daily. Curious @DivyKairoth — is this mostly organic pull from the Claude ecosystem, or did you push somewhere?
