September 2026 Chrome Extension Growth Report from Extension Ranker

Every month, Extension Ranker tracks which Chrome extensions grew fastest and kept their gains. This post skips the leaderboard and asks a simpler question: what kinds of extensions took off?

We sorted every extension into a vertical niche, meaning the platform or use case it serves plus what it does (a YouTube translation tool, a Discord tool, a Google Search tweak), based on its title, and looked for clusters.

The short version

The biggest single niche in September was fantasy football league tools built around ESPN: draft-room rankings, league importers, connectors that sync an ESPN league into an AI assistant. The reason is unusually clear. This season NFL Fantasy leagues had to move to ESPN, and the official migration left league history behind. That landed right before draft season and created a burst of one-off needs that small extensions were quick to fill.

Group by platform instead and Instagram comes out on top. Follower trackers, downloaders and a mass-unfollow tool all sit on the Monetized risers list, and none of them broke out anywhere else.

Behind those two:

  • Full-page screenshot tools, one of the most crowded corners of the store, which still produced several breakouts at once.
  • Live translation and captions for video meetings, inside Meet, Zoom and Teams. It's the one niche that shows up on every list.
  • Google Search tweaks: one turns off AI Overviews, another blocks the built-in search games for schools.
  • Cheat tools for classroom quiz games. We report this as what people installed, not something we'd recommend.

Back-to-school runs through all of it. Some extensions grew because students went looking for them, others because schools installed them on managed devices.

A note on scope: counts include every spot, locked ones too. We dropped a few entries whose store data didn't match ours or that have since vanished from the store.

Breakouts

Breakouts are extensions that grew several times over within thirty days of taking off and kept the gain.

Most common niche: fantasy football league tools, with full-page screenshot tools next.

Top three niches: most of the top spots belong to niches that also show up further down, which makes them look less like flukes: fantasy football, full-page screenshots, AI voice-over translation for videos, crypto wallets and Google Search tweaks. The rest are one-offs: ad blocking, extension security auditing, classroom monitoring and a bilingual reading tool for learning English.

Why: different forces show up here. The fantasy football tools rode a calendar event, the move to ESPN plus draft season. Demand like that comes fast, and we expect it to cool; we'll check in October. The screenshot tools are the opposite case: a "solved" category where several separate extensions broke out within days of each other in mid-August. That smells like something on the traffic side (store placement, search ranking, Chromebooks coming back online), not several teams shipping great work the same week. We don't know which yet, and won't guess.

Some growth here didn't come from users choosing anything. Classroom monitoring, exam lockdown and search-game blockers rose with the start of term because schools install them on managed Chromebooks. That's real distribution, just a different kind of growth.

Two smaller patterns:

  • AI products are starting to ship Chrome extensions as their front door, like a local AI agent that uses your logged-in tabs and a batch tool for Google's AI video generator.
  • Google Search itself became a niche. One breakout's only job is turning off AI Overviews, so removing AI is a positioning of its own.

Seedlings

Seedlings are small extensions, still under a thousand users, that grew quickly during the month.

Most common niche: cheat tools for classroom quiz games.

Top three niches: none of the top spots are cheats: a creator-discovery tool for brands looking for influencers across Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, a listing autofill tool for sellers on Indian marketplaces, and a Japanese-learning helper written for Chinese speakers. Narrow tools for a specific crowd.

Why: back-to-school again, from the student side. The rest of the list is scattered: a browser VPN, a Roblox page enhancer, a live meeting translator, a stock-watchlist workaround and a tool for spotting AI-agent hooks on web pages. Each appeared only once, so we wouldn't read a trend into them yet.

Monetized risers

Monetized risers are extensions with in-app purchases that gained users fastest.

Most common niche: Instagram follower trackers, with Instagram downloaders right behind. Add Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp tools and social media is the biggest share of the list by far.

Top three niches: mass-unfollow for Instagram, auto-engagement for Facebook groups, and live translation for video meetings. Social-media growth tools take most of the top, same as the rest of the list.

Why: look at what these tools do. You save a post, see who unfollowed you, unfollow in bulk, or export a group's members. These are things the platforms don't offer, or don't want you doing at scale. One downloader's store listing says it plainly: Instagram gives you no button to save a photo or a video. That gap is the product. The flip side: they live at the mercy of platform rules.
