Connect Google Analytics

Your rankings tell you where your extension shows up in Chrome Web Store search. Google Analytics tells you what happens next: how many people open your listing, where they come from, and how many of them install. Connect it once and Extension Ranker shows both side by side in Growth Analytics and on your extension's Overview.

Access is read-only. Extension Ranker never changes your Google Analytics settings or data.

Before you start

The Chrome Web Store can create a Google Analytics 4 property for your listing. Extension Ranker reads that property, so it needs to exist first.

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store Developer Dashboard and pick your extension.
  2. Go to Store listing, then Additional metrics, and turn on Google Analytics.
  3. The store creates a property named after your extension ID (the 32-letter ID in your listing URL) in a Google-managed account. Members of your publisher can access it in Google Analytics.

After you opt in, the Chrome Web Store sends an email when the property is ready. Enable it early to start building your analytics history.

Connect your Google account

  1. Open Growth Analytics (or the Google Analytics section at the bottom of your extension's Overview) and click Connect Google Analytics.
  2. Sign in with a Google account that is a member of the publisher that owns your extension.
  3. On the Google consent screen, tick "See and download your Google Analytics data". If the permission is not already selected and you leave it unticked, the connection fails and you will be asked to try again.

After you approve, Extension Ranker looks for a property whose name matches your extension ID and links it automatically. You don't need to pick a property by hand.

What you will see

  • Page views, visitors, installs and conversion rate for your listing, as daily charts and weekly totals.
  • Visitors by channel and installs by channel, so you can tell how much of your traffic comes from store search compared with direct visits, referrals and other sources.
  • Visitors by country, useful when you decide which languages and markets to optimize for next.
  • Listing changes on the timeline, so you can line up an edit you made with what happened to traffic and installs afterwards.

Data is refreshed every day. Today's numbers appear tomorrow, once Google Analytics has the full day, and the last two days may still change slightly while Google finalizes them.

Troubleshooting

"This extension's Google Analytics property isn't in your connected Google account" The Chrome Web Store manages the property and grants access to accounts on your publisher. Either click Connect a different Google account and sign in with that account, or ask the publisher owner to invite your Google account as a member of the publisher in the Chrome Web Store Developer Dashboard. Then click Check again.

The connection failed right after the Google screen The analytics permission box was most likely left unticked. Connect again and tick "See and download your Google Analytics data".

No property was found at all Additional metrics may not be turned on for this extension yet. Turn it on in the developer dashboard (see Before you start), give the store a little time to create the property, then click Check again.

I can see properties, but none has my extension ID Extension Ranker matches the property by name. Check that you enabled Additional metrics for the right extension and that your Google account belongs to its publisher. The store-created property should be named after that extension’s ID.

Managing connections

You can see every connected Google account in Settings, under the Google Analytics tab. Disconnecting an account stops Extension Ranker from reading its analytics. Data that has already been collected stays in your account.

If a connected account turns out to have no property for any extension you track, Extension Ranker disconnects it for you and tells you which account to connect instead.
